If there is one challenge that almost all Conferences face, it is the significant increase in demand for help. Most Conferences are short on money for utilities and rent, and some have even stopped rent help completely. Over 120 households are on the Home Delivery waiting list now, with an approximate wait time of 6-10 months. (Read the article on this program—and where we need help.) Neighbor Services is scheduling pick-ups 4-6 weeks out due to the high demand from Home Visits, and beds for children and adults are almost flying off the shelves.
Food selection at the 30th Street Food Pantry, LYN Pantry and Boulevard Place Pantry is still adequate, but limits have appeared in many items supplied by the USDA. As more cuts are implemented in subsidized food programs such as SNAP, WIC, TEFAP and free and reduced school lunches, we expect to see fewer selections and less food available. This will directly impact how many hungry neighbors seek additional food, and what we can provide.
“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.” (Attributed to theologian Reinhold Niebuhr)
We must recognize and work to change those social injustices that need to be addressed. Poverty, homelessness, and hunger are primarily due to social injustices, and these are solvable problems over time.
But, for today, there are some things we must accept and carry on. As Vincentians, we offer unconditional hope first, and we must never give up on hope. We may not be able to solve every problem, but through prayer and work, we will always do what we can. Thank you for being part of this holy work.
p.s. This month, on Aug. 17, is National Nonprofit Day—it’s a great opportunity to celebrate the positive impact of the nonprofit sector and to show appreciation for the dedication of those who work tirelessly to make a difference.
