The holiday season has arrived once again—it feels too soon. There will be many parties and celebrations with family and friends, which is what the season is all about.

For those we serve, however, the holiday season can be a time of stress and depression. For many, the cost of presents under the tree will be prohibitive, as higher rents, utilities and healthcare costs consume a larger share of the monthly budget. There is always more month than money.

At our food pantries, we witness the challenges faced by neighbors in need. Each month, the pantries work to bridge the gap between SNAP (food stamps) benefits and a family’s actual needs. Last month, after SNAP was unfunded for just one week, we saw a record number of shoppers come to our pantries for assistance. Thanks to the generous support of our donors, we were able to assist everyone who reached out to us.

In the Indianapolis area, about 35% of households are just a paycheck or two away from financial collapse. Lost work hours, an unexpected bill or a sudden illness can spell disaster for them. And even in relatively good times, rising costs for rent, food, utilities and healthcare can quickly outpace the best-laid plans.

The Society of St Vincent de Paul was founded nearly 200 years ago to help those in need. We say that “no form of charity is foreign to the Society.” While we can’t solve every problem, we try to offer everyone hope–the hope that the support we provide, along with the providence of God, will help our neighbors go forward to lead fulfilling lives. So often it seems we are the only ones who care, but that isn’t so. Nevertheless, our role is key in many cases.

Please enjoy this holiday season and remember all the good things we have through the grace of God. Continue to pray for those we serve—and those who serve—in these challenging times. May the peace and joy of the Christmas season stay with you throughout the coming New Year.
