Thanks for your interest in volunteering with SVdP! Volunteering at our food pantry helps us fulfill our mission of serving the poor, and providing for their most basic need of food. When you fill out and submit the form below, one of our volunteer coordinators will contact you to schedule your service. See the volunteer opportunities below to understand our areas of need so that you can discuss your area of interest with the coordinator.
1. Proper Dress
Slacks, jeans, no shorts, modest tops. No sandals/flip flops.
2. Be Respectful of Clients/Others
We strive to see the face of Christ in those we serve, and serve with.
3. Maintain Privacy/Confidentiality
Our clients and volunteers deserve for their privacy to be honored.
4. Be Aware of Hazards
Keep work areas safe and free of trash.
5. Report Incidents/Issues
Please notify the Food Pantry leadership about issues of concern.
Our 30th Street Pratt-Quigley Client Choice Food Pantry serves all of central Indiana residents in need. Responding to God’s call to “Feed the Hungry,” we strive to manifest God’s love by providing a selection of food and self-help programs to those in need in an atmosphere of dignity and respect for client and volunteer alike.
Food items are largely received through donations from USDA Commodity Program, Kroger, Colonial, local Food drives, or from vendors at discounted prices. Our self-help programs include the Gennesaret Medical Clinic, Ozanam Legal Services, and our Changing Lives Forever programs (click on links for more information). The following volunteer opportunities exist for the overall function of the Food Pantry:
Shopping Day Volunteer Opportunities
Tuesday – 8 AM – 1 PM
Thursday – 8 AM – 1 PM and 4 PM – 8 PM
Friday – 8 AM – 1 PM
Saturday – 8 AM – 1 PM
Answer phones, take messages, direct calls.
(schedules are flexible)
Interview clients, verify eligibility, enter/update information, record visits.
Issue tickets, call numbers for Intake and Shopping. Make announcements.
(Position begins one hour before shopping.)
Shopping Cart Assignment
Check card for today’s date, assign cart to client, mark cart number on ticket.
Refrigerated/Frozen Foods Assistant
Retrieve requested items from cooler or freezer, restock racks as needed.
(Allow 10 minutes to set up before shopping begins.)
Check card for eligibility, check for proper number of points and no duplicate items.
Bag groceries for clients.
Bread and Free Area Assistant
Inform clients of limits, assist in selection.
Load Groceries in Vehicles
Park carts aside while client retrieves vehicle, match ticket to cart, load groceries.
Push carts (maximum of 5 at once) up ramp and into cart assignment area.
Stocking Days Volunteer Opportunities
Monday – 8 AM – 12 PM
Wednesday – 8 AM – 12 PM and 4:30 PM – 7 PM
Thursday – 12 PM – 3 PM
Friday – 8 AM – 12 PM
Repackaging Bulk Foods
Read and comply with Food Handling rules and repackage product per specs.
Sorting Donated Items
Sort product into carts or large totes.
Stocking Exchange Carts
Neatly place product sin carts, keeping like items together when possible.
Replenish Shopping Line
Check for depleted items and restock bins or replace entire cart or tote.
Administrative & Maintenance Volunteer Opportunities
Hours can be customized to volunteer’s availability – so long as no interruption to client shopping.
Log hours into volunteer database and run reports for management.
Inspect Pantry inside and outside areas and use volunteers to keep in order.
Sweep floors, clean bathrooms and kitchen, empty trash, refill dispensers.
Equipment and Grounds
Landscaping, mowing, leaf-raking, snow removal, tool and equipment care, etc.
Monday – 7 AM – 12 PM
Wednesday – 7 AM – 12 PM
Thursday – 7 AM – 12 PM
Truck Driver (CDL not required)
Transport product from Food Banks and Food Vendors, complete paperwork.
Load and unload products using Pallet Jack or Dolly, complete paperwork.
Home Delivery Volunteer Opportunities
Filling Bags for Home Delivery
Help on “assembly line” to place designated items in bags, set-up for drivers.
Wednesdays – 7:30 AM – 11:00 AM
Home Delivery Drivers
Pick up bags from Pantry, deliver to clients, complete and return paperwork.
Wednesdays – 10:30 AM – 6:30 PM
